Browser-Based Screencasting

Screencast-o-Matic is a new browser-based screencast utility that includes free hosting. The heavy-iron commercial screencasting applications, Camtasia and Adobe's Captivate, contain more features. But the increasing number of free alternatives, including Screencast-o-Matic, may be all that a developer needs.

*Why bother?

If you're doing serious work, you will not have time to fool with this stuff. But sometimes, you might want simply to accomplish a single task without having to purchase a large commercial application. That's when it might serve to look for a free alternative. Otherwise, it's good to know that free alternatives to all of the big commercial applications exist, if for no other purpose than to keep providers like Adobe on their toes.
